Fished from sun rise to 2:00. Struck out on stripers. Disnt see anyone else catch any either. Plenty of people trying too. Watched the people at the mouth of deer creek, nothin doin there. Moved to another creek mouth I know, got a big fat carp that must have been between 20-30#, didnt get anything else there. Moved back down the river to my white perch hole, got two good sized cats and a bunch of white perch, some big ones too boot. All in all it was a good first trip, water was about 45 or a little above and stained. Im sure the recnt cold snap slowed the fishin, and believe me it was cold this morn. If we dont get a big rain and it warms up fish should be chewin the bottom of the boat off next week.

I was in the Susky on Saturday & Sunday. I had some fresh herring purchased from Herb's in North East on Saturday morning. Put in at Port Deposit, and fished in the river, the barges off of Havre de Grace, down by the islands, and down near Sandy Point. I had 4 big runoffs over the two days that were stripers.. I hooked 3 of them but landed none of them. I guess my 17lb mono was not enough as it looked like each one was cut with a clean break. They didn't touch the baits with 40lb braid, naturally.
The weather was kinda damp, but tolerable, and was real nice Sunday afteroon until that major storm rolled through. I had water temps from 48- 51. Through some BAs while anchored up with no strikes, but a great way to spend a weekend despite 1 30" catfish to show for it.
I posted a ride along for Saturday too late, but if anyone wants to fish please let me know. This is my 2nd season fishing for stripers down there, and I can never learn enough. If anyone has any helpful tips of tricks please let me know. My main line is what was breaking, I had a fishfinder rig, with 1 oz, a swivel, 30 lb fluro leader to 8/0 circle with a chunk on it.
Tightlines, Mark

You figure the vast majority of the fish you are catchin are 20-25lbs with fish gettin up to 50-55lbs, unless your after the schoolies which i doubt if your using herring. 17lb mono just isnt gonna cut it, unless you really wanna wear them down with a long fight which isnt wise since they are runnin to breed. Personally i use 80lb Power pro as backing with 2-3 ft of 30 or 40lb Big Game as leader, which sound like what you have on the other rods so you will fine. And the old big bait, big fish addage does apply with stripers, whole herring will produce larger fish than chunks, but of course you will get fewer.

yeah, I'd go real heavy on spawning stripers. It doesn't take much to hurt a big female full of eggs. Especially since its catch and release right now. We always let the females go during the season. Strange that they your breaking 17 pound line though. I swear by the fluorocarbon leaders.

I'm headin out to the flats on the 18th of April. Hope the water doesn't warm too much before then. I will be throwing all my muskie baits on 65lb TufLine. I sure hope I can get another one like in my avatar. Didn't even get a bite last year, although the weather was much warmer.
