Has anyone heard of a law in the near future to ban 2-sroke outboard use? I am going to purchase a new Basstracker ProTeam 175TWX next month, and the dealer and Basspro gave me a deal on a 2-sroke outboard at $900.00 less than a 4-stroke. I talked to a friend who has been boating for sometime and he told me that 2-stokes may be banned in a few years. Don't want to buy a new boat and the have to turn around and buy a new outboard in a few years.

Under EPA, EU & California minimum emissions limits manufacturers had to become more efficient by 2006. This did not specifically regulate any technology (2 stroke). This was directed at the manufacture of, not use of outboards. California has it's own legislation that does ban "dirty outboards" on certain lakes. Certainly older 2 strokes would be effected. No legislation banned the technology. Newer 2 strokes are much cleaner than older and some (E-Tec) rival 4 strokes in emissions.
You should not have a concern about the continued use of your engine. I just bought a new Mercury 2 stroke a month ago and expect to use it for many years.

They most likely will ban the regular carbed 2 strokes sometime in the future but I don't think it will be in the next couple of years just for the fact that there are so many still out there. Personally I would go with a DFI 2 stroke but I don't think Merc makes one in the HP range your looking at so I would probably go with the 4 stroke as it should be a little more fuel efficient. If the $900 is a big deal to you I'd go a head and get the 2 stroke and not worry about it. JMO
