I have a question. I am constantly seeing that commercial for the Cajun red line during the fishing shows on ESPN on Saturdays. The commercial states that the line is the deal because red is the first color to disappear underwater. My question is, if this is true what is up with all the sales of Red hooks, bleeding tubes, and hard baits with red highlights? Who is full of it and who is not. Just curious.

I could see the point of red hooks. If red hooks disappear underwater i'm all for it. I've been painting hooks for many years but to match the plug or bait color. As for tubes and hardbaits I think they are just trying to come up with something new that will sell. And if enough people have a good day of fishing while useing the product the word will get around. I know i'm allways lookin for something new to give me an edge. If nothing else the red will just break up the solid color of the lure.

That is a point i didn't even consider. That the hooks were red to reduce their visability. From different things i have seen and read they say it is to produce a bleeding look on the bait. However if the color does disapear and the hooks become unvisible to the fish it seems like a good idea. Thanks for the input.

This has been an ongoing debate for several years now, from what I have read the color red is the first color to disappear, I think 10 feet was the stated depth and may depend a little on water clarity. When the color red becomes invisible the object that it's painted on just looks like it is black, at least that was the way I understood it. The tackle industry isn't trying to catch fish they are trying to catch fishermen and they are doing very well. One last point, most fishermen fish in water less then 10 feet deep so red will be viewable and can be an effective color choice. JMHO

Right. I recall reading this in InFisherman a few years back. "Disappear" means "appear as black." I think you can follow the colors of the rainbow to determine which colors retain their apearance deepest...ROYGBIV ... So red goes first and lures in the Blue/Violet range ratain a colored appearance the deepest. AS noted, it has a lot to do with clarity.
