Here's my review.............TOTAL JUNK!
I have emailed Mercury and have posted comments on MANY, MANY of the more popular Facebook Pages!
"Mercury 2.5 outboards are TOTAL junk!!!. I bought a 2016 back in March and have had issue after issue with the motor. It's back at the dealer again and now Mercury Tech Support wants the dealer to replace the carburetor and fuel pump on my "new" motor. This thing is total garbage; buyers beware. I'd expect mercury to do what it takes to make a customer happy as opposed to replacing half the parts in my so called new motor. Just a very poor experience all around with my first mercury product. I should have bought a Honda instead. The dealer has even stated the motor is a lemon but they can only do what mercury is willing to do. Shame on you mercury for having them just start to replace parts. Do me a favor and get me a 5 HP upgrade just for all of the inconvenience you have caused me out on the water. I bought a motor so I could explore more water; I ended up paying $900+ to get ticked off every time I take it out on the water. Garbage product; you need to backup what you sell as opposed to just changing parts!!!"
There you have it......DO NOT BUY THIS MOTOR! Hopefully I will be getting the 5 HP upgrade in the very near future.

I THINK I saw that Brunswick sold Mercury Marine in the last 10 years, hopefully your experience is not typical for all their products now.
I grew up with an old Mercury Sno Twister and a 50 HP outboard, I hope they haven't gone to crap.

I just looked online and it states that Brunswick is the current parent company of Mercury? I just sent them a VERY long email regarding the issues I am having and Mercury's response to my issues.
Fortunately the internet can be a very powerful tool. I have begun to post my review of Mercury and their lack of customer service across the web in many locations.

My new Merc 2.5 HP O/B won't start. No fuel to the cylinder as evidenced by a dry spark plug. I sprayed starting fluid into the carb intake and got an occasional weak exhaust backfire and a kickback on the pull rope. My analysis: a blockage somewhere in the fuel line (yes, the fuel valve is open) and a malfunctioning ignition timing unit. Lesson learned over and over again: "Buy from a local merc dealer, never online". We old guys remember the legendary performance of the old Mercs like the inline 6, and transferred that trust to this Merc. Wrong! Stupid!

I have the 2020 model and although the manual recommends regular 87 fuel with up to 10 % ethanol, I have had it back to the dealer every season for failure to start. The 1st time they charged me $160 and found nothing! The second time they charged me $375 to replace the carb float valve. Mercury refuses warranty on carb issues because they can't prove recommended fuel was used. Extremely disappointed.

Do not use regular 87 Octane fuel! Use only premium ethanol free fuel. If you run the carb empty after each outing as suggested, it will take 10 to 15 pulls to start the next time. Be sure to close the fuel valve if you need to tip it up or fuel will leak.

Update: My 2021 2.5 hp merc 4 stroke outboard now starts and runs. The problem was debris plugging up jets and fuel passageways in the carb, perhaps old fuel that turned yellow and slimy. The process included cleaning out all the fuel lines to/from the vacuum pump and cleaning the inline fuel filter attached to the shut off valve. During this work I discovered that the throttle mechanism is designed to open the throttle valve about 2/3rds, opening the throttle valve further (manually) causes the engine to backfire, and slow RPM's. This is one reason why the engine only develops 2.5 HP. At any rate the lesson learned is never use ethanol gas, instead buy a gallon of "no ethanol" from Home Depot, etc. ($26/gallon), and even with "no ethanol" gas, drain the carb bowl after use.
