I am gonna be hitting the Brandywine this week or during the weekend. I was just wondering if any of you guys have tips for the elusive fall smallmouth. I was there this past Sunday and saw quite a few cruisers of very good size. However, I could not get them to bite on any of my go-tos. In the B-wine, I can catch them great right through August, and then, nothing. Help? PS: Saw several nice looking trout. Any fall trout tips?

We were catching smallies last weekend on the schulykill. They were being very picky. Even my go to white 4" grub wouldn't work. That usually catches plenty of little guys when things are slow. Finally got some action with a 5' black senko. They were not in the deeper holes at all for some reason. All caught in fast moving shallow water with a slow presentation. Just letting it drift down stream. Different body of water but same ideas probably apply.

If you see them cruising, thats a good thing but they typically see you first and thats a bad thing. Fall quickly goes from activity to desolate seemingly overnight so take advantage while you can. Long casts with baits that have high triggering qualities such as senkos, flukes and tubes...natural colors if nothing still, down size. If you found productive fast water fish swimming baits.

bigger minnows/live bait,,,unless of course you insist on fishing artificals.

You guys were all very helpful. I went out the other day and picked up a couple of bass (largemouth, smallmouth, & rock) on a small, dark stick worm. Nothing bigger than a foot, but still bass. I too had more success in current areas. I will be making a trip out there this weekend. I also caught a couple fallfish, which are very fun.

Never really fished smallmouth much in fall as I'm usually too busy archery hunting. However, in Bob Clouser's book, he says you need to go much more realistic in the fall with your bait/lure, and drop line size because supposedly the cooler water makes their eyesight better. For what it's worth...

I've been using 4-5in senkos. Dark color/ weightless with a lot of success. Just let it sink and roll on the bottom. I got a nice 16" small off of creek road this past week.

....a few weeks later and activity has screeched to a hault. Difficult to find any active fish but when you do they are good ones.
