I was on the lake early (5am) to 7ish and in the north end there were a log of fish chasing up small minnows w/ an occasional explosion on the surface. I tried buck tails, wooly buggers, streamers and even went to a broken back w/ my spinning rod... no luck. Am I thinking about this wrong? I had one hit a buck tail but that was it... oh and a frog didn't work to well either.
Hope it cools shortly.

Do you have any flies that look like a crayfish, hellgrammite or a leech.

Ugly ones, but that is true of everything I try to tie. I'll give them a shot next time and see what happens.
Good thinking.
Thanks!

I'm sure some of them are chasing minnows but I bet they are chasing midges or chironomids up from the bottom. Brian Chan and Skip Morris have some nice flies for trout in lakes. I'm sure you could find some of their pattern recipes online. Denny Rickards is also another great tyer of flies for trout in lakes and stillwater.
