The streams are low by me and I'm looking to expand my "fishing grounds." Do you fish in the canal or the river right beside it? ( I think it's the Schuylkill) I saw a few guys waiding by some islands using minnies. Anybody having luck here? What works best here? I think there's catchfish, carp, and smallies there and I'm just itching to catch some fish - it's been a hard year for me. I'd love to break out the waders + rods soon. Probably cobwebs on them from sitting in the basement for 2 weeks. I'm hoping to either hit Green Lane for some carp Saturday or maybe here depending if I get some info.

Yea thats the canal and the skuke where your talking about. Fishing either one is good. largemouth and gills from the canal, and small mouth and anything else from the river. My only complaint about the whole canal/river areas are they do get fished a lot. I've caught some smallies in that area in the river, never fished the canal though.

yeah it gets fished real hard. Plenty of nice channel cats in the river. I'm going over there tonight in my boat if the weather holds up.

I've caught nice channel cats in the canal as well. There are also white crappies in the canal. I prefer the canal to the river myself, especially for bank fishing.

Brad I don't think the weather will hold up and it probably won't hold up for me tomorrow. It looks like thunderstorms all weekend into next week. I'm going to try both the canal and river and maybe buy some minnies or shiners. It would be nice to catch a nice catfish, havn't caught a decent one this year. I'll have to look up some other baits that are usually used to catch catfish.
I'm almost at the point of desperation to catch anything cause this year has been the worst ever for me. Maybe I'll have more luck in hunting season this year.
Any special rigs used for catfish?

I like to use a slip weight and circle hook on a leader with a swivel. Then I switch on my bait runner or open my bail. That seems to be the most important part for me. No resistance. So they can just take it and run. Super fresh in lionville on 113 always has chicken livers. Gordon's carrys some stink baits too. I was out in the thunder storm. It was rough. No fish. Couple little bites. Worst trip this year. The waters real warm.

baitrunner FTW! Thats definately one of the most fun parts about catfishing/carp fishing, when the line starts peeling off and the spool is running. Catfish aren't usually shy of heavy line, tackle, resistance etc. But its good to let them think they have a hold of your bait for a few seconds before setting the hook. That way you get a better hookset, and know whether they are just mouthing it, or actually taking it.
