Tried the same as last week. Launched out of Trenton and went to Kat-Man-Du to get some herring. Took a rough & windy ride down to buoy #84 and found some drop offs. Live lined the herring with no luck. we started chunking some of the dead ones and got a couple of catties (one was 8 lbs.). Two stripers, one 18" and one 28" (both released). Had a couple of run offs but I think I'm having trouble with hook sets using the circle hooks (tried both 5/0 and 3/0 hooks). Any advice on what I may be doing wrong? Thanks

Are you actually setting the hook, if so you will miss a lot of fish. I personally like to use a bait runner reel for that kind of fishing. When I get a bite I wait until the fish starts taking line off the reel and then just start reeling until I feel the weight of the fish and then lift my rod to the fighting position. Hope that makes sense and is helpful.

You're right, I think I'm still trying to set the hook. Old habit. I've only gone river fishing a few times and still learning. Thanks for your help
