Hi, I did a three lake tour this weekend started at Chambers, where I was skunked no big deal I have had luck there before. Sunday morning was at Speedwell Forge, and this is where my question lies... I am normally targeting bass whatever lake I fish on,but Speedwell eludes me. I recollect a term of a lake being "Carped out" in other words the lake is infested with carp, they consume large quanities of vegatation destroying food and cover for baitfish, therefore no food for the bass, and ultimatley no bass. Am I correct? I had fish jumping left and right, but couldnt get a bite, I went shallow and observed mud being stirred up, hence figuring out it was carp jumping, I tied on the only Green thing I had which was a Yozuri flourescent 1 inch plastic rattle type minnow, the first cast landed a huge carp what a fight, I didnt have a net with me but was able to de hook her...I never intended to fish for carp and this wasnt my first. I was suprised before using lite gear on The Conestoga. Should these fish be destroyed for thier nusance factor? They do put up an awesome fight though, I will be going for them again. Sorry for long post..

Oh yeah my third lake was the always dependable Struble on Easter afternoon where I pulled in a nice 13" LM on a Zoom watermellon craw. Last monday I pulled in the largest bass I ever and may never again catch, it was a lunker, and left me shaking, that was on a black Venom tube. Here is another question; Is it unethical to be targeting bass this time of year? As much as I enjoy bass fishing, if I am effectivley harming them or thier fry I will alter my fishing schedule..

Hey rtherbe, hows it going I haven't seen you on in a long time. I don't think you are going to hurt the bass population any by fishing for them at this time of the year. Look at all the states down south, I don't think any of them have a closed season on bass and it doesn't seem to be hurting the bass fishing at all. I know their lakes are a lot bigger than ours but they also get a whole lot more fishing pressure then our lakes. Another reason I don't think it's going to hurt anything is that most of the bass fishermen around here were fishing for bass this time of year, even before the PF&BC made it legal. Some guys don't like it and think it's wrong but others don't see anything wrong with it. I will admit that I do prefer the season to be closed with catch & release allowed. JMO. A lot of our lakes and rivers are loaded with carp, I really don't have an answer for you but I can see where they might destroy a lot spawning beds by rooting around and eating the eggs. If you really want some info about what effects the carp might be having on the bass population you might try e-mailing PF&BC to see what they think. sites.state.pa.us/PA_Exec/Fish_Boat/mpag1.htm
