Been a little lax getting out but made a short trip this morning. Hit the State Hill launch area at daybreak flat calm no alewives to be seen. 5 casts in a guy cruises through my casting area ? He leaves and I resume casting with even less hope of any hybrids. Another 20 casts and another boat launches and starts fishing towards me. Figured I best fire a few casts up that direction - 3rd cast 3 twitches with the Spook and game on. A feisty 15-16" smallie put on quite the show jumping several times till I got it in and released it. Now the weird bit after the release my Spook was laying on the ground. When I cranked the reel handle it didn't move and then I noticed that I had no line going out my guides ? Don't have a clue how I broke the line guess it happened after I got the fish landed somehow Packed it in after that ....well I did try a few casts at another spot but that was more just testing the new swimbait rod....nothing in there to eat the swimbait.

I guess it’s about time for the alewives to start spawning. I was thinking over heading over next weekend for a night trip.

I went out Saturday night. Alewives were splashing around all over. Nothing feeding on them that I could find other then some catfish.

Took another predawn stroll over at State Hill looking for hybrids. Again no signs of alewives - a few carp splashing around but that was about it. Did have a bass swing + miss on the Spook but that was it for 2+hours I was there. A bit warm once the sun broke over the horizon

I’ll be out Saturday. Alewives are in full spawn. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Out for a stroll over at State Hill. Finally a few scattered pods of alewives - sadly nothing chasing them. Had something on briefly(guessing a bass) but got off after 3-4 cranks of the reel handle. I didn't even get to feel the weight. Two boats working the other end of the "point" also struck out as far as I saw.

Brutal morning out there no fish, no bites and 1 A-hole. Started off with a buzzbait in the predawn darkness. Hit the rip-rap first and made my way out to the point as it got light. Ditched the buzzbait broke out the worm tossed that around the point and the steep bank for another hour or so. Tied on a "spook"- mega backlash on 1st cast due to hitting a bush behind me. Failed at "picking" it out and tossed the worm some more. Picking rd #2 I broke out the clippers made 1 snip and was able to get it out, only lost about 50yrds of line. Several boats had launched throughout the morning but nobody hit the rip-rap. So I moved back there and tossed the worm and a chatterbait around till the A-Hole showed up - If you're in a boat JUMP around shore bound guys. The good news is he didn't catch anything there either !

Sounds like a tough morning Ice,sorry to hear that , mega backlash happend with baitcaster Yes? I've been using one for a very long time and still screw up every once in a while, as far as A-holes == there is no boats at the Big "O" , have you been there lately?

Yeah baitcaster.... "worm" rod is 6'6" the new "crankbait" rod is 7'6" with the added 2-3' of line to lure hanging on the end it was enough to hit the brush on my backstroke. Lure speed slowed(sometimes stopped) + reel speed still going fast = mess.... LOL.I was amazed I got it out with just 1 snip usually they require a few cuts and respooling(I guess overfilling my reels paid off). Been using them since the 80's and still get "normal" backlashes but can usually get them out pretty easy.
Other than for crappies(a few but didn't hit them) earlier along 73 I haven't been hitting the big "O". With my COPD and the "city" blocking access it's pretty difficult to get to any productive spots anymore. I was going to try the little cove at graffiti bridge last week one morning but it was packed.... No boats but plenty of "fellas"...

But "fellas" usually only hit those easy to get to spots, so there is many places where you can fish alone if you don't mind doing some walking

Another strike out walking the shoreline this morning. Tossed the buzzbait along the rip-rap first thing - NADA. Headed out to the point and switched to a Spook - Zilch. Then a jig-N-pig(took that off before I got snagged for good) switched to a worm - Yayyy sunny taps. Tied my hot chatterbait from last year on my 2nd rod and moved back to the rip-rap - Zip. Tried the worm in there more sunny taps.... Tummy started growling - time for breakfast

Talked to my buddy that fishes the Tuesday night T's he said they haven't been weighing in many fish so that might be the problem. I had the local guide pull up and fish a secondary point that I can't reach from shore - he struck out too so I don't feel so bad. I'll probably hit the State hill ramp area this week. Maybe try some finesse rigs too.

Tried both launch areas over the last week or so..... STILL STINKS LOL They did stock musky last week so a couple of them were hanging out. Didn't see them this morning hopefully they learned to hide otherwise the Herons got them. New lake next time just got to figure out which one ...
