Got the chance to take my dad out on the Jon boat for the first time in a while and took him to marsh with one goal in mind, to get him one really nice bass. I was skeptical when we got there because water levels were still high, but clarity was good. We moved down the bank and sight fished, I let him cast first, but he wasn't having much luck. I caught a handful of nice fish on roboworms, and then we moved into the cove closest to the dam and something special happened. We saw a fish, looked about 3 and a half lbs, tucked up under a tree in shallow water. She looked locked to the area, so I told my dad to cast to her. She was really aggressive, each cast coming out to investigate the bait, but would not commit. A couple times she even picked it up by the tail only to drop in again. I kept the boat in position while he worked the fish, and once in was fired up, I gave him my drop shot with a roboworm and the trusty trapper hooks drop shot hook. Three casts later he was hooked up. I looked down as the fish dove under the tree and ran for deeper water. I saw it as it hit the hydrilla line turn on its side, and when it did it seemed to gain about two lbs! He fought the fish to the surface and I was able to get a hold of her and bring in the beautiful 5 and a half pound female on the other end. We snapped a couple quick pictures and moved to release the fish right back to the tree she was under. We talked after the catch and realized that that bass was the biggest my dad had caught in 20+ years, maybe even his life. That fish, along with the rest we caught that day, would probably have set our best 5 at around 15lbs. It was something special and something I know neither of us will forget anytime soon.

Sounds like targeting bedding bass to me. Hmmmm. Guys wanna complain about muskys. Lol. You guys are your own worst enemy. Keep pulling bass off their spots when they are guarding babies.

Tightlines, Thank you for the comment, and I'd like to say you are right. I completely agree and I usually stay away from bed fishing, in fact, the day I went with my dad we saw plenty of bed fish and avoided them. The one big one he did catch was locked to an area but did not seem to have a bed set up yet. Even so, I made sure to be quick with pictures and bring the fish back to exactly where we caught her from. The only reason I made an exception for this fish was because of the occasion. Its rare my dad comes out with me and I wanted to put him on one good fish and that was the best place, time of year, and way to do so.

females will be on the beds getting ready to or actively laying eggs around this time. And just to remind everyone (not mb specifically), but it is illegal in PA to target bedding bass

Horrible to see a bunch of debbiedowners trying to take the moment away from this father and son. Sounds to me like a bunch of reports chasers/couch potatoes that get sore when they hear a nice fish being caught. Great job sir on the CPR and the negative ones- carry on. (Masterbaiter- great job)

(Masterbaiter- great job) No offense taken to the comment, I see it just as someone who, much like myself, cares about the fishery. Tightlines is right about the negatives of bed fishing, but like I said before this was an exception I saw as reasonable. Nothing will take away from that moment and Im honestly glad to hear from anglers that care about the fishery. Also, thank you Harry for that comment, I did not realize it was illegal to bed fish, I was under the impression it was only illegal to keep them this time of year because of them bedding.

There is no problem with bed Fishing. I fish all over the country and this is one of the few states I know with the stupid rule about bed Fishing. There are tournaments with over400 anglers keeping fish to weigh in during the spawn and those lakes have no shortage of bass. Dumb rule. Congrats on a great fish catch you definitely harmed nothing!!!

The FACT is in PA it is illegal to target bass on beds. Not exactly true. You may cast to a bedding fish, one cast only. From the Regs - " It is unlawful for an angler to cast repeatedly into a clearly visible bass spawning nest or redd in an effort to catch or take bass."

It's unethical. You guys that don't buy into this should do some reading about it. respect the fish.
