Took my son out for his first night time crappie trip and it was an just an off night. My sonar was saying the thermocline was right around 12' which I couldn't believe, and i had so much clutter in the 6-12' range that I couldn't find any fish arches in my normal honeyhole. Below 12' was a dead zone without any plankton or anything. With that knowledge I headed up the lake toward a 12 FOW bottom and hit a large school of fish suspended at the thermocline over 21 FOW. Dropped the anchors and set up the light. Took about 20 minutes for the life to build in around the light and eventually the sonar loaded up with fish. My son was catching large bluegills sporadically on wax worms and I caught 4 legal-size crappies on fathead minnow and jig double-rig. The biggest crappie was just a shade under 11" and came on a big tipped with a 2" silver-tinsel shad soft plastic. Got broken off by something large on a double rig too. Overall, it was a fun night. A little chilly, fishing a little slower than normal but still a good time. We boated around 20 fish in 3.5 hours
