This may have been the last trip for the year, the water was warn enough but horribly murky because of the rains. We had a bunch of smaller bass and this one pig which went 4 pounds 13 oz.

Nice Fish! My buddy and I also hit Blue marsh yesterday and got the skunk. Friends of ours were there and had 3 lg. bass and a walleye. I'd have posted this on the new Blue Marsh thread, but hate to start it off on a negative note. [skunk] Good luck in the coming new year. Ed

Now that's a good way to start a new board; with a pic of a nice Blue Marsh smallie; great job Andy! I'll be buying the new motor soon but I probably won't be putting the boat in the lake until early Spring. Once the Spring-time weather arrives I'll be out there full force trying to figure the lake out and hopefully I can put a few of those brown fish in my boat as well. I never really fished for smallies but given the fact that I'll be hitting Blue Marsh this year I have acquired a few well known smallie baits and will be trying several new techniques as well. I have been chasing green bass for so many years it'll be pretty exciting to start chasing the smallies as well.

right now they seem to be following the bait fish around... we pulled up on a spot and I immediately noticed balls of bait suspended at 20' over 35' of water. That smallie chased my bait up from 20 feet down and hit it 7 feet below the boat. I actually saw it engulf my bait!

Wow, I din't know they would travel that far to get to a bait. Is that a common thing?

I have read that smallies will come up from quite a depth for a topwater at times. And Andy; that is AWESOME to be able to see that!

last week the OTHER guys were catching them on jerkbaits, smallies were rising up from depths to hit the jerkbaits, so yes it is common for them to track baits far above them... including topwater. I did see another HUGH smallie do the same thing but turned away at the last minute.. he came up from 20 feet and swiped at the bait just below the trolling motor. Seems like the change of direction triggers them... from the horizontal on retrieve to vertical as the bait nears the boat.
