Worked a lot this week so I had some comp time stored up. So I thought, where havent I been in a while? Hopewell! It's a nice little lake and I can fish the whole thing and be home for dinner.
Caught about 16 greenies with the biggest weighing just over 2 (est). Lotta skinny bass in this lake! Caught one 'cigar pike' as my pap called them. I saw him chasin it but I couldnt pull it away fast enough!
Temp was 62-64 over most of the lake. Clarity was good. Winds were light in the AM, turning real windy and unpredictable in the afternoon.
I started out trying to force feed them plastics, hammering the islands and the first cove. Saw some up shallow, lookin like spawners, but its so clear I had no chance. Moved around the lake clockwise. I was convinved the emerging grass was where it's at, and hammered it longer than I should have. I'm convinced the 6-9' weed edge/drop is where the big fish were in the morning. I saw baitfish activity there and some hitting the surface, but no bites. Ah well, that's fishin!
I picked up a few shallow fish on plastics until I made it to the flat in the cove near the spillway. I hammered them here. The wind was blowing dead onto it and the pike and bass were triggered. Caught about a dozen in here and some some nice pike cruisin in skinny water. With the wind it was suckin all my juice or I'd have stayed there longer.
Picked 1 or 2 off the dam and riprap and started up the shady bank, knowin I had to go soon. I wadded up one of my baitcasters and had to pick up the dreaded spinnerbait rod to work the laydowns and damned if that wasn't what they wanted! I wish I had time to go back and work the spinnerbait over the weed edges but I had to go pick my boy up.
Great time, lotta little fish in that lake!
