Looks like we are going to get short cold spell and it's going to be below freezing starting tomorrow night till saturday morning. Not sure if that's a long enough period to get safe ice. What do you guys think?
I would love to get out but at the same time I would rather be safe than sorry.
We still have the rest of december as well January and February, but hopefully this is a good start and enough ice is generated to withstand the rain sunday.
Tightlines!! Frank

Thank you for the update!! Glad some ice made it through the warm spell. Hopefully it froze over some more last night and keeps building ice throughout today and tonight.

yea hopefully these last 2 days are enough for it to cap and start making ice. the next 2 weeks or so doesn't look great but if the night time temps stay down i think it will slowly build

How do you guys determine if the ice is thick enough or do you get bold and walk out a few feet. The lake is shallow enough at the banks but I'm pretty interested.
Thanks, Mike

2 choices .... a spud bar - chip a hole (you can tell thickness by sound after years of practice) or take your auger and drill holes as you go.
Many lakes will have different thicknesses over the lake so don't assume that it's 6" thick all over especially early and late ice.
It is always a good idea to go with someone and carry safety gear. I always have dry clothes in my truck too.
