Since a good friend of mine almost lost his life by falling out of his boat while crossing a large lake in the 'daks last year. I have been considering wearing a PFD all the time now. I am looking for something that is as comfortable to wear when it's 85 or 33 out. My vests are just to bulky to be comfortable; I am a little on the heavy side (OK I'm fat).
Any suggestions for me to check out would be appreciated.
If you go inflatable - check to make sure the one you pick operates in cold weather. Not all of them do/did.
As per online research and also the PFBC Boat Safety Class pretty near all of the inflatable life jackets will not operate properly under 32 degrees. Actually they will work but not at 100%. If you need to inflate under 32 degrees you will have to blow into the manual fill tube to fill 100% as the CO2 cartridge will not fully inflate the life vest. I personally won't be out on the lakes in weather under 32 degrees but I do carry a spare standard life jacket on board just in case.
If you are looking for a good deal on a good quality inflatable life jacket be aware that Gander Mountain actually has the absolute best price for the Mustang Inflatables. I picked up a manual Mustang and refill for less than the price other folks are asking for just the life jacket. Plus I got free shipping.
In the past I have owned a BPS branded inflatable which was comfortable but seemed like a total PIA to pack back up if you ever needed to inflate. The Mustang inflatable is of much better quality materials and very, very simple to pack back up again.
