It's still about a month to early, based on historical records.

Thanks I'm familiar with water temps and times of year. I have my own records too. Sometimes in late March we've gotten into some. Mid April on a weekend gets insane down there. People are down there fishing for them already. So I was asking if anyone has tried or heard anything.

It's not early at all. The shad are always there in march but the cold temps are why they don't bite. I've caught whites at conowingo in early march and in good numbers if the temps are right. They are there now and and these warm temps the next couple of days should turn on the bite a little. That being said I am heading down tomorrow afternoon for the first trip of the year.

I'm jealous. Let us know how you do. I'm hitting the tidal Schulykill for some stripers Friday in the kayak.

Didn't head down yesterday. My buddy who lives there had some meetings to attend. He said wednesday was slow although last week a few of his friends did very well.

I have heard of only a few caught so far. I think the cold snap set things back a little. With the warmer weather in now it should start to improve over the next week I would say. I will head down later next week to give it a try.

Keep us updated. I'm thinking I'll fight those crowds over the trout crowds next weekend. Had to get a little loud with some trout fishermen this weekend. I was staying down stream casting up to a tiny little hole. They saw me and walked right up to the hole. Spooked all the fish. I told them I'm fly fishing and need a little room. A minute later their two friends did the same. Told them in advance but one guy ignored me and started casting. I started yelling, his friends told him to stop and they left. There was not one person within a half mile and there's dozens of spots to fish in that stretch. You walk right up to a hole in crystal clear water you're going to spook fish. Idiots. Rarely ever have any problems like that. Usually get some common courtesy when fly fishing. Some people are just genetically stupid white trash, born and bred.

yellowlab i hear ya on ignoramuses. stupidity, inconsideration, and lack of common sense/good manners can spoil a good day fishing any time, any day even more than getting skunked. always seems like it happens more so around opening day, which is the main reason i avoid the area streams for the first two weeks (at least) of opening day. that said, i am a firm believer in karma.

I think I'll run down there sat morning as long as I'm not working. Fishing reports say it's slow but I'll give it a try.

Fished south of Deer Creek and up at the dam (around the boat launch). Did better once the water release kicked in. I landed a 5 hickories and one decent sized striper. my buddy landed 21 hickories. MANY of the fish were hooked on the outside of the jaw which a) may explain the number of fish that got off before being landed and b)indicates the water is still a bit chilly. Gonna wait until this next cold front is out of here before trying again....end of next week.
Around Conowingo there are some places to get darts and spoons. Pretty reasonable, all sizes and colors. The place next to the Royal Farms (same side of the street, heading towards the dam) has powder coated darts which are awesome. No more punching out the hook eye hole. Good spoon selection too. I like Nunguessers (they have those) and of course Tonys.

Kayaked the flats for stripers but no luck. Hardly any boats out there. Went over to the dam and deer creek. Caught a flathead on a spoon. There was no water flow so I left. Deer creek at dark was great. Caught a ton of hickory and a few Americans. Had shad swimming at my feet. I forgot my fly rod and there was hardly anyone there. I'm regretting that.
