Hey guys, I've never ice fished before and I am looking for some tips. What is the best species to target when ice fishing this area? What action ice rod/line is best? What lures or jigs have the best results? Any tips would be great!

Localy most guys fish for panfish thru the ice. Generaly bluegills, perch and crappie are the easiest to catch. As far as lures are concerned, normally most people use small jigs designed for ice fishing, diffence being most ice jigs have no hair or feathers. Reason being the hair and feathers will freeze in the cold water. Smaller sizes are prefered usually 1/80th to 1/32 oz. Many tip the jigs with wax worms, spikes (maggots), or mousee's. Fathead minnows are also excellent. Some of the most popular lures are Swedish Pimples, Rapala jigging lures, Fairy Jigs, Moxy Jigs, Moon jigs, Dots ,etc. Rods are short ultralite actions in 18" to about 30", with a small UL spinning reeland light line (2-6lb) You can also use tip-ups, which allows you to fish multiple holes around you at the same time. Generaly you use some type of bait on these. You will also need something to cut a hole in the ice, such as an auger or ice bar, and a skimmer, to keep the hole open. We stock a good selection of ice fishing equipment as well as all the baits mentioned(when the ice gets fishable). We are in the process of putting out ice tackle as we speak, with more to come shortly. Stop in and see us...

definitely stop in Gordon's. good people and they have everything you need to get started. bare basics = ultra lite ice rod, some teardrop jigs, fatboys, skimmer, auger and wax worms (i like spikes if they have them). once you get the lake look for a group of people and fish around them (not too close!) drop bait to the bottom, real up slack and lift rod so that lure is 6 inches off the bottom after a minute or so real up another 6", repeat until your jig is up to surface. youll find most fish are on or very close to the bottom, with the exception of crappie and trout.
some times strikes are obvious, most time they are very subtle (you may only see the line twitch) if you think you have a hit set hook and real up...Good Luck!
