Bob - I've been fishing Umpqua's Deep Sheep and Porky's Pet (Bass Pro Shop) on WF-7-F fly line with an 8ft 8lb leader. Since I fish it from the shore, I've been out in front of the office because I have room to back cast.
It's been about 3 weeks since I had my fly rod out, but those two lures have worked great for me in that spot. You can find similar lures in local stores that will work just as well. Gordon's may have something similar.
Good luck.

bass pro, blah. fly fishing isnt that specific if u just want to catch bluegills and even bass. small poppers work great early morning and evenings, in or around the weeds, and ive been catching bigger gills on underwater nymphs, my own pattern, doesnt have to be fancy at all....
btw Gordons has plenty of flies and a good selection of poppers, cortland makes great small fly poppers in all colors, ill go through dozens of them in a nite catching more bluegills than u can imagine!

Oh, absolutely. You can use just about any popper- -just wanted to give Dole an idea of color and size. You could probably throw a cigarette butt with a hook and catch blue gills. I've been getting some pretty nice bass with those too.
