Just a heads up for the Deer hunters, I live right in the middle of the game lands, been hunting here for 40 years, been living here for 20.
Late last week I was down along the old Boar's Back abandoned rail line between Northside & Rt. 23. I saw 6 Deer run by, I got a good look at five of them. All 5 I saw had antlers, the 6th probably did too. I flushed them out of the wetlands along the tracks. One of them was at least an 8, the rest were average racks.
I was down there on my horse, and that day I packed a rifle in my scabbard instead of a slug gun. Didn't matter, I only can shoot rimfire's off of him, a shotgun blast would send me to the ground, and the horse back to the barn, and I'm not really a Deer hunter anyway.
Would someone please come up here & kill some of these Deer?
This past fall, a single buck destroyed about 1500$ of trees on my property. I think there's still a week of Deer hunting left?
The pressure up here was very light this year compared to past years, and it would appear that the majority of the Bucks up here survived. Should make for some better racks next year.
Also, while riding in the Natural Lands Trust property 2 weeks ago, I broke out into a field and saw a massive flock of Turkeys. I had to do a double take, there were so many birds, I thought they were Geese. I stopped counting at 53 birds. I see Turkey up here all the time, but that's the first time I've seen that many.
This flock has an extremely large range, and are very difficult to pattern. They could be in Hopewell Village one day, and on the south side of Rt. 23 the next.
3 weeks ago, again from the horse, I spotted a 'Yote scavenging from a fresh gut pile. It's the third one I've seen here this year. I tend to hear them a lot more than I see them.
I also wanted to include a minor rant about safety zones. It's amazing how many hunters have no concept of what 150 yds. really is. I rent the large white barn on Northisde rd, and I live three houses down from there. Anyway, I've seen a number of guys park across the street, load and shoot right there along the road. There is an apartment above the barn, and people living in the farmhouse. Less than 50 yards from where I've seen guys shoot. It happens way to frequently.
Many times while standing in my paddock, I've been sprayed with pellets. If a pellet would hit my baby in the eye, I'd have to put him down, as a horse with one eye is basically un rideable. So, if you're in the vicinity, please be careful.
