The Environmental Protection Agency has ruled against a petition on November 4th that would have banned all lead used in fishing tackle. The petition was presented to the EPA on August 3 by several groups to prohibit the manufacturing, processing, and distribution in commerse of lead for shot, bullets, and fishing sinkers. "The sportsfishing community applauds EPA's decision" said American Sortfishing Association vice president Gordon Robertson. "It represents a solid review of the biological facts, as well as the economic and social impacts that would have resulted from such a sweeping federal action.

I am not looking forward to the day when they ban lead ammo. Lead alternatives are not cheap. Has to be harder on rifle barrels too. Some states are already doing it.

I took some biology courses at PSU and there were some pretty big studies on the effects of lead shot on waterfowl. Supposedly many types of waterfowl will ingest the lead to aid in digestion. The lead in turn would poison the bird and its eggs. I am pretty sure these studies lead to the production of steel shot.
