Did pretty good, weather wasnt real co-operative and the guys thats showed up @ 6 and set up 75 yards away didnt help but i ended up with 2 drake woodies a hen woodie and 2 drake mallards, saw a ton of birds though. The woodies were really responding to the whistle too, first time thats happened.

I've had similar things happen. Theres always someone showing up at daylight. If I over slept I wouldn't even bother going out unless it was for geese. My friend is trying a new spot tomorrow morning in honeybrook. Hope it good because I have off friday.

Two drake Mallards and a Hen. I got out on Marsh Creek and almost to my spot around 4 AM. I saw three groups set up in the same area. They were probably spaced 100 plus yards away from each other but I was surprised. So I turned around and hunted plan B. Saw lots of birds. If I could blow my duck call worth a dam I probably would have had some more. I really need to step up my calling.

Thanks for the congrats fellas. I just looked up that ra ra call. That sounds real good. Yeah I am just going to keep at it. I got pretty decent with my goose call after a lot of practice. Just need to do the same with the ducks.

Also was curious about the size of everyones decoy spreads. I put out 18 birds on Saturday. Do you guys typically go more, less or somewhat the same?

depends on the spot and what I'm hunting. I generally don't use more than a dozen for puddle ducks, usually less but thats just me. On saturday we were in a slow moving stream we used 6 mallard decoys, 2 black ducks and 3 woodies. Would of used more woodies decoys but lost a few on a windy day. As for calling, if you have a good pleading "come back call" your in business.

Generally the in the early season i dont use more than 6-8 decoys, and 2-3 goose decoys(for confidence ). Mostly because the spots i usually hunt you never see big packs of ducks sitting together, and the ducks know what looks weird because they have been there all summer, and i rarely call unless the ducks are calling. Late season i start using more, usually a dozen to 2 dozen because your getting migrators and they dont know what the ducks normally do in a certain area, and i increase my calling. When im diver hunting though i go all out 3-4 dozen decoys, and a wind powered spinning wing, and if im in a boat i use a black rag on a pole to flag at them, which suprisingly works well. But like Takem said it depends on where your hunting, Sometimes you have to make a change and pull decoys or put more out.

one thing Ive noticed is late in the season a small spread can work real well in a heavily hunted area. I guess they get used to seeing big spreads. Works good on geese. Last january I was at struble and a there was another hunter with big goose spread of 50 or more. We threw out 6 or 7. Every single goose on the lake came to us instead of the big spread. My friend couldn't believe it because he's a field hunter and uses 4 dozen or more decoys.
