I traded in my heavy 12 GA. Mossburg 500 at Gordon's and bought a lighter 20 GA. Mossburg "Slugger". I was wondering how it would perform and I was successful in bagging a 8 pt. buck in the Ludwig's Corner area of Chester Co. Using 3 in. Winchester Supreme Sabot 20 GA. ammo. (2000 FPS) the buck dropped like a stone at about 75 yds. Field dressed the buck weighed in at 145 lb. I was very surprised at the 20 GA. performance and a very nice way to break in a new gun.

145 dressed is a big deer. Congrats. Do you have any pics? When did you shoot it?

Congratulations Will, sounds like a nice buck. If you got a picture email it to me and I'll post on the board header for you.

Yes, it was a heavy buck and estimated to be three or four years old. The distance was 75 paces in standing corn using a Swift 4X scope on the 20 GA "Slugger". I got it on Thursday of the first week of shotgun season. In '99 I took an even heavier 10 PT in the same area and it weighed in at 160 LB field dressed---a huge buck estimated at five or six years old and this was with the old 12 GA that I traded. This buck was taken at 110 paces in an open field using Winchester 3 in. sabot and 4X Swift scope. I have had a great spot on a private farm where I have been allowed to hunt for 30 years now.
By the way, the Mossburg 500 12 GA with cantilever rifled barrel and ventilated rib smooth barrel--incl. four chokes--may be still available at Gordon's at a good deal. The ventilated rib barrel includes a red dot scope on custom mounting. I did not get as much trade in value as I expected because I had painted it with camo bow paint. Really no big deal as the paint comes off readily using laquer thinner---just takes a little time---a good winter project. Along with this gun comes some very good luck as well---many nice deer as well as a 21 LB Tom Turkey to it's credit. Shoots 3 IN group at 100 YD's using Winchester Sabots. If it is still available it would be a good idea to check it out.

I'm not familiar with Swift. apparently it works o.k. How does Swift compare to others (Bushnell, Leupold, etc.)?

The Swift Co. makes an excellent line of mid price scopes with same qualities as higher cost scopes. Their most desirable feature is the extra long eye relief which is a good thing when installed on a shotgun. In my case it prevents those cuts on the eyebrow from the recoil. My 4X Swift was priced at $90 when I bought it and has served well over the years. It has acceptable light gathering quality and takes shock very well. I have stumbled several times in the field/woods and gave it a substantial "bump" yet, it maintained it's accuracy. It's only drawback is the size/length which some hunters do not prefer.
