Any body heard any reports on the flats or the river up to the dam, if there are any shad or stripers in the river yet? Keep us posted if you hear any thing going on down there. Can't wait for those big shad to start running !

Went shad fishing for the first time this year, fished below Conowingo Dam but there wasn't much happening and not very many people fishing. I did catch two Hickory Shad on a silver shad king spoon. I talked to a guy that said there were a lot of Shad being caught on Thusday at the dam and another guy said his buddy told him they were catching them down river at Deer Creek. If you go good luck.

I was down there yesterday ( 4-18 ) from 1:00 to 6:00. Not much going on at the dam, but there was a steady pick down below Deer Creek. I managed about 20 or so in that time, plus a nice bonus 25" striper which hit my fluttersthingy. Tons of comorants out there though. I saw quite a few eating good sized shad...I can't believe that they can fit such a good sized fish down there throats.

Been there two weekends in a row. not much the first week except some huge carp at the mouth of the OctaraoCreek. I dont think I spelled that right. Any way last weekend the shad were chewin the bottom off the boat every where I fished. As for stripers, They are there, some big. If you fish for them watch out It's not legal in the river. You could claim insanity if you get caught ;D

Fished the river ,mid day, today 4-20 for about 2 1/2 hours. River was actually running low when I first got there, and fairly clear. Caught four Hickorys right away, couple of small ones and two nice ones. Then the sirens started and they started dumping major water in the river. Kept fishing same area while constantly backing up , fishing slowed. After the water stabilized at a constant level, the fishing picked up again. Caught 10 more Hickorys and 1 small 15" striper, in about hour and 1/2 . Gave my new St. Criox Avid rod a good breaking in Caught all the fish on a Nungeser, double shad rig (pink/white/yellow tail dart on top, chrome spoon on bottom). All but one was caught on the spoon. Most of the other anglers were also catching fish, but not too many people fishing, to my surprise. Caught all the fish by the boat launch area (Shures landing). Would have stayed longer but grass needed mowing

Back down the river today. Water was low and running slow when I got there and stayed that way all day. Could only catch two shad in four hours fishing. Nobody was doing any good, most all day. At about 6:00 pm they started putting more water in the river. Water came up a foot or so and started running fast. About 15 minutes later the fish turned on. From 6:30 to 7:30 PM when (they kicked us out ) I caught 12 fish again all hickory but nicer size fish. As has always been the pattern there, faster flowing water moves the fish! Good luck if you go, fishing should only get better the next couple of weeks, especially when the whites show up!

Just to let you guys know, the American (white) shad are in the river now. Most are being caught right at the dam and a few are being caught down the river. The DNR was there netting fish caught by anglers at the dam on Tues and transporting them up stream.(not sure why they are not using the fish ladder) The size of the fish I saw was impressive. The two I caught were easily 4+ lb fish. Still a lot of hickory's caught below the boat ramp and at Deer Creek. Today chartreuce colored shad darts was the the hot lure. The river was high, running fast and murky the last two days, making fishing tough at and right below the dam. Down stream the water was better and not as rough. Good Luck !

Me and my cousin went shad fishing this morning (Saturday 04/30/05) fished for about 3 hours, it was slow, my cousin caught 3 Hickory shad and I caught 4 Hichory shad and 3 nice American shad. Caught most of them on silver spoon and a couple on chartreuse shad darts. We fished below the dam, down from the boat launch, there were only a few guys out, guess not to many people felt like playing in the rain.

Back down the river today 5/4/05. MidniteBasser and I spent most all day catching fish. The day started a little slow with a few whites (MB hooked one monster that looked to be around 6-7 lbs) and hickorys around the boat launch. We moved down river a little ways and started catching more hickorys there. After a couple of hours there, we moved back up to the boat launch again. As the day got later the fishing got better. At one point I made over ten casts with a fish on every cast. We caught several double headers each. Mostly hickory with a fair amount of nice whites thrown in. I'd say we probably caught close to a hundred fish between the two of us. Chartreuse shad darts again did the trick, with many also caught on spoons. This is the time to be on the river to catch fish. Water level was good and fairly clear. Good luck if you go!!
