I'm visiting family in the Allentown area this summer, and I've read that both the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers have a very good flathead fishery.
How far upriver on the Schuylkill is the flathead fishing productive? Are they common around and north of Pottstown? Most of what I've read seems to be from Phoenixville south. Similarly, how far up the Delaware are they being caught consistently.
Also, while I'm not asking for anyone to give away their specific honey hole, if someone could suggest general areas along the Schuylkill (Phoenixville, Pottstown, or further north) with accessible bank (including at night), I would greatly appreciate the help.
Thank you for any information.

State record flathead was caught in the spillway at blue Marsh lake just north of Reading PA at night. He was walleye fishing with jigs. Sorry I don't know any river spots.

Actually it was "caught" on a Rat-L-Trap type bait and I believe walleye was already closed when he caught it. I would not try to target them at the spillway (that fish was pure luck that it washed down that day !) .... but would target them up in Blue Marsh Lake. Look at the "habitat" map on the PFBC page and target the downed treees or other manmade cover that has been sunk. Can't help on the rives either but I would stick below Phoenixville. I have heard reports of some caught near Reading but nothing that I can confirm. There is very little water over 5' deep from just N. of Reading(Cross Keys) up to Hamburg though. The tuffest part is getting access to the rivers as most of the shoreline is private property(at least up here around Reading).

Icemole was the record broken again? I remember reading the article when it happened. The article said guy was bouncing jigs off the bottom. Now article could have been wrong I'm just repeating what I read

No it's still that fish.... don't know what artical you read but that is the wrong story. I never saw that guy toss a jig at anytime while walleye was open - 90% of the time he was fishing bait.(kind of screwed things up for those of us tossing jigs or jerkbaits) He took the fish to the old Rick's bait shop for the unoffical weight and the picture had a "firetiger" Rat-L- Trap type lure "in the mouth".
PS. In the years that I've fished it I've caught 1 walleye on bait. Snagged 10 for every 1 - I caught on jigs(not trying to snag them and they were released). Jerkbaits they ate pretty good. I think the PFBC made a deal with the ACOE that they only release water from the "top" of the lake so fewer fish get flushed down.

It looks like there are some public parks with water access around Blue Marsh and on the river, but my guess is that they run people off at night (when the catfishing is best) for understandable reasons.

Gotcha icemole. The article was from a Reading newspaper. I was living up there at the time. I just happened to buy the paper on the right day. I thought you could fish blue Marsh at night? I'm on another site and guys have pics from there at night

Yes you can fish Blue Marsh 24/7... I was mainly refering to access along the Skuke + Delaware. While there are some "parks" along those waters (access would be limited to park rules) many of the other properties along the rivers own up to the bank and could be posted. Once you access the water then you are free to wade anywhere you like as long as you stay below the high water mark.(This does not mean flood stage - just normal spring flows) That also only applies to the Skuke + Delaware and a few other major rivers not the average trout creek.
