A Reading man was arrested on a criminal warrant from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for taking too many striped bass from Blue Marsh Lake while fishing without a license in the spring, authorities said Tuesday.
Juan Gonzalez, 37, of the 1200 block of North 10th Street was taken into custody Monday night by Reading police, officials said. Arrest details were unavailable.
He was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail after arraignment early Tuesday before Senior District Judge William N. Hall Jr. in Reading Central Court.
Gonzalez, along with Ricardo Gonzalez-Medina, 30, of Reading face a misdemeanor count each of serious unlawful taking (three or more times the daily limit) as well as summary counts of fishing without a license and violating rules regarding seasons, sizes and possession limits.
Gonzalez-Medina was arraigned in May and remains free awaiting a hearing. His hearing date has been rescheduled several times and is currently set for later this month, court records show.
According to court papers:
On April 12 about 6 p.m., Waterways Conservation Officer Troy W. Merrell saw Gonzalez and another man fishing along the shoreline of the lake in Bern Township. He saw a bag that contained 21 striped bass.
After interviewing the men, Merrell discovered that neither had a fishing license. Besides fishing without a license, they violated state fishing regulations by keeping too many fish including 10 that were under 20 inches in length. The daily possession limit for the species was two of 20 inches or longer.
