I finally got a bass boat, and I'm looking for an entry level fish finder recommendation. I'll only get on a lake 5-10 times per year, and I have a 14' aluminum V hull. I could do some research online, but I've been on this board for a couple years now, and I value your opinions a lot. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I have a Lowrance Hook-4X on my new boat and actually love it. I have it on the console so it's right in front of me so the 4" screen size is just fine. I had it installed as an extra with my boat (I had the included unit installed on the bow) but BPS was/is selling the kit for $200. This unit has GPS, standard view and also DSI. It is also a Chirp unit. The kit also includes a free sun cover for it and also a Lake Maps card. I was out on BM this past Saturday and had a chance to mess around with the unit and it was great. I got very clear images on all screens and was easily able to locate bait balls with the DSI. The lake maps card included BM lake which was awesome (and it worked very well). Not sure if any of the other smaller local lakes are on it or not. So if you're looking for an inexpensive unit that just works very well this a quality product; I am certainly pleased with it. www.basspro.com/Lowrance-Hook4-Fishfinder/Chartplotter-with-Lake-Insight-Pro-and-Cover/product/175345/

I would like to find a portable option to switch from my kayak to my jon boat. Any suggestions for that?

If you fish structure, I'd recommend a minimum of a 7 inch screen. You will see very little detail on a 4 inch screen. The first shot is of a sunken bridge on Kerr Lake, VA. The second picture is crappie under a dock. The larger vertical lines are the pontoons supporting the dock, and the dots to the right are crappie under the dock. Probably 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water. A good sonar will eliminate that 90% of fishless water. Folks are always updating their electronics to the latest and greatest. You can pick up stuff a year or 2 old for pennies on the dollar. Charles just sold an excellent unit here on the board.
