I was on the water by 5:45 this morning and by 6:15 had 4 medium size bass. Caught them right across from the boat ramp on plastic worms. After that nothing, not even a nibble. Called it quits about 8:45.

Not even the little ones (10-14"s) were hitting after 845? Typically you can nab quite a few of them throughout the morning and then around 10:30 to 11:00 is when the bigger ones decide to play. At least you had 4 medium sized ones; which equals large Bass by Hopewell standards.

Headed down this AM for a little. Caught 2 10" lm both on Senko's. No interest in anything else. Had a blow-out on my sandals so I didn't hit it as hard as I wanted but did give it a pretty good go.
It's been a while since I was down(during summer) 3-4yrs but 2 things seem to have happened 1) What happened to the beavers ? Even the trees they felled are gone. 2) Did they "weedkill" this lake also ? There used to be extensive milfoil(?) beds in the shallow end and along both shores - gone. There are a lot more pads than there used to be.
I wanted to ask over at the Park office, but till I made the hike back to the truck I was thinking cold drink from Turkey Hill(forgot to bring one LOL)

Go down in about a week or two and check on the milfoil. I remember a post of mine from about 2-3 years ago which was pretty much the same as yours; "where's the mifoil"? I went down there and there was -0- milfoil to be seen so I thought maybe they had sprayed it. But I went back about 2 weeks later and the lake was infested with it, haha. I am thinking the time I thought is was gone the water was a little murky towards the boat ramp end and that I probably just couldn't see it under the water. Not saying this is the case this year but your post just reminded me of mine from a few years ago.

It's been awhile since I was down 5-6 yrs (?) The milfoil was well established by the opening day of bass(mid June) heck most of it did not die off over the winter as you could drill a hole and be on it. I was going to E-mail DNRC but for some reason I can't preform that function LOL. I just don't know why it would disappeare after all those years - except if weedkiller was used(which they do use at Marsh Creek and Nockamixion).
When the beavers were around at least we had fresh fallen trees, but didn't see any signs of them or the old trees either.

Yeah; that's a shame with the Beavers. When they built the hut on the one island a few years back that created the best location on the whole lake. I went down there the first Spring that the hut was there and caught 20+ bass in one outing just pitching a soft plastic craw to the hut. Never had another day like that fishing the hut again. I have not been to Hopewell in a few months now but typically (in years past) I stopped going mid-summer anyway because it was such a pain to get your boat out through the milfoil to fishable water. But those milfoil beds also made great weed edges farther down the lake on the swimming pool side. All you needed was a drop shot fished in about 7-8 ft. of water along that hard edge. I've had numerous 20 fish days fishing those edges.

I saw the beaver last weekend at about 5:30 am. He hides the whole day, there's too many people walking around.

Well I got a reply from the park -- They are spraying to "control" the lily pads(FAIL there are more pads now than in the past)sadly it kills the submerged vegetation. It seems the "boaters" don't like paddling through weeds so the DNRC will poison the lake killing weeds that provide cover, shade(cooler temps) and oxygen for fish, turtles, frogs and insects. I'd be willing to bet that the trees the beavers felled were removed as a "boating hazard" too. They did claim the beavers are still there - hut on island.

Strange they would be spraying the lily pads now; from what I have heard in the past from VERY reliable sources is that the ONLY way to control the pads is to spray them in early spring before the actual pads grow on the stalks. If the pads are already growing then your'e too late for the season?? I for one don't seriously mind the milfoil although it can be a pain getting your boat out past them when launching. That lake would be perfect if there were 50% less pads and the milfoil growth was cut in half as well. Then sink some structure out in the middle of the lake as well so the Bass had some cover out there for the summer in deeper water. As it is now those Bass have either got to suspend out in the middle of nowhere or sit under the pads in shallow water? Thoughts.......?

I'm sure they "treat" lake in early May like they do Marsh Creek + Nockamixion. I'd also say that the milfoil was 90% gone last weekend when I was down. I fished(wading) the right shore all the way down to the dam breast. There was some milfoil kinda looked like green shag carpet - not much taller. Meanwhile the pads have spread to include the old beach area.

I've been down to Hopewell multiple times and I have caught plenty of fish. Mostly onsenkos, I'm getting 10+ fish days and at one point, over 20. Best day so far was 22, worst was 8 for me. All the fish are small though. Might have to bust out the ul gear. Figured out a pattern for the bigger ones, hopefully putting together something for the REAL big ones

I must be doing good - I have had similar days but have yet to catch any bass over about 15 inches. The biggest one I caught was sort of out in the middle straight off from the "beach" near the boat rental on a crankbait. Kind of random.

Milfoil is bad, but the fishing was not. 're did a pattern that I used to use all the time and got over 10 fish, while my dad fishing with my usual stuff only got one. They are in the breaks of weeds near trees.
