I was upstream on Friday and did pretty well with 4 browns landed and one long distance release. None were caught in a big, deep or well known hole such as Miller's. Was hoping for a brookie but managed to find them elsewhere yesterday.
For me the trick has been to not fish the obvious holes. Once the season opens the easy to access or read spots become either completely fished out or any remaining ones get tired of splitshot bonking off of their heads and move out of the hole. Smaller pocket water, back eddies, seams and behind larger rocks become a preference for trout that survive the onslaught of the first week or so. Fish where you think there may not be fish and you will be rewarded.

Good advice. There's something really satisfying about catching a trout from a shallow riffle.

Good day for me on the EB today. Pulled in half dozen in just under 2 hours. I'm usually fly fishing on the EB but thought I'd try something new today using the UL. All were rainbows and all were over 12". Caught 4 on a black Mr. Twister grub and 2 on chart trout magnet (reminded me of a green weenie), which was new for me - I think I like!!!
Anybody have any special trout magnets they like to use and does anyone use them on a fly rod?

I like the green weenys for freshly stocked trout. I mix in elk hair caddis in later in the spring.

I'm still a bit new to fishing these trout magnets. Anyone have any presentations that work better than others? Do you fish upstream like a nymph or downstream like a streamer? Float? No float? The couple that I got on the chart yesterday were thrown a quarter upstream with mostly a dead drift and no float.

Yeah I normally just fish it upstream and let it go with the current downstream. I just use the jig head that comes with them and sometimes use a float to suspend it a little.
