Fished near the dam early. Good action until about 10:00...steady pick of hickories and landed my first American of 2016. Went nearer to the dam before leaving. Pretty quiet. Need rain to increase the flows!

Yeah there was very little flow. Mud shad were stacked up. Tried real hard not to foul hook them but it's tough.

From the Maryland DNR today:
The water flows are still running below normal at the Conowingo Dam and the lower Susquehanna River is running a cold 48° today. Water temperatures at the Susquehanna Flats area are slightly warmer, and are currently running at 50°. The hickory shad spawning run in the Deer Creek area has retreated to a hold back type of position until water temperatures reach the mid 50° mark. The promise of warmer weather may kick this much anticipated fishery into gear.

Fished the mouth of Deer Creek on Monday but it was slow pickings. First shad I had on was hammered by a striper but it let it go after a few seconds. Only caught about 20 fishing for about three hours in a prime spot. Met my buddy at the dam and it was even slower up there. White shad are around and my buddy caught some yesterday at the dam.

I've never fished the Susquehanna. Just curious, where is the Susquehanna Flats area and is there easy access for wading?

I am going to try tomorrow morning (Thurs 4/21). IMO it is all about the water flow once the temps get warm enough. Last week they had 4 spill gates open all week on the east side which really messed things up. I have heard good reports from this week so will take a run down early tomorrow to check it out. I think the hickories are all but done in the next week or so but the whites should start picking up.

I've never fished the Susquehanna. Just curious, where is the Susquehanna Flats area and is there easy access for wading? Below the Conowingo dam on Route 1. Either side of the river (Cecil or Harford counties) can be good but the majority of shad fishing takes place on the Harford side which is the western side. Anywhere from there south to Lapidum will have shad. Generally wading is helpful but limited. No real need to try and wade out too far.

Susky flats area is basically where the mouth of the susky meets the chesapeake bay. No easy access for wading.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll need a MD license. Is there any decent wade access from the Susky State Park?

No idea, but I've never seen anybody wading and fishing the flats when I've fished that area from a boat.

Report from 4/21: Fished well downstream from the boat launch area. Consistent water flow (4 lg and 4 small) kept the bite hot until they shut things down around 11:00 am. It was a fish on every cast from 6:-7:30 and then slowed down to a fish every couple of casts Landed 117 hickories including 5 doubles, 4 whites (all bucks)and a handful of miscellaneous fish...including several dink stripers and some white perch -- a sure sign the season is nearing the end. Also noticed a high ratio of bucks to Roes and the water is really warm. I give the hickories another week at the most but the white shad bite should hold out a bit longer.

Was down yesterday, at the dam, got there about 7:30 am. Fair amount of guys fishing, mostly off the platform by the dam and a few wading just below it, most were catching fish. I fished half way down the river (above the boat ramp), and did quite well. Caught 20+ whites (all nice size), 1 Hickory, a 18" striper, 3 smallmouth (10-12 inches). and a 12" catfish. Caught everthing on 1/4-3/8 oz shad darts (chart,& Blk head/red body and tail). Water flow was on the slow side with only a coupe of small generators running. They were calling for larger flow of water at around 5 PM, but I was worn out by them and decided to call it a good day.

They did bring the water up around 5ish yesterday. The hotline has been a bit more off than usual this year in terms of the release schedule. I know it is subject to change but I have been down quite a bit and don't think it has been true yet this season. Certainly not while I was there. Hoping for high flows tomorrow morning when I am back down. So much better than low.

Cast and crank? Jerk and twitch? Do you fish them as is or do you add plastics? Were wading on the east side or west side of the water?
