I had the opportunity to go out on the river yesterday and with the recent warm temps, I couldn't pass it up. I got to the ramp at about 9:30 am and started fishing around 10 am. The water temp was right around 50 degrees and the water clarity was right around a foot. I started around the pizza place that serves food on the water and got my first fish at about 10:15. It was a nice chunky 2 1/2 lb largemouth that I caught on a wacky green pumpkin senko. I thought that with the dirty water a black and blue jig would be good so I started to throw that around and had one smoke it but didn't hook up. I fished up the bank up about until the creek feeds in and managed to catch 2 more 2 1/2 lb largemouth on the wacky senko. Everything started to slow down so I made a move to the bottom of the oxbow downriver. The fog was so think out their that it was very hard to navigate and I could only go about 5 mph and still be safe. When I got down there I started to throw the senko and almost immediately hooked up with a nice 3 lb largemouth. I started working up the oxbow and at the very top there were about 5 fallen trees in the water. They looked too good to pass up so I pulled up and started pitching the jig around them. On one of my pitches the line got caught on a branch and the jig went into the water about 2 inches above the surface. As soon as it landed a 4 lb largemouth shot out and grabbed the jig. That was pretty special to see the fish actually hit the jig and swim off with it. I got it in the boat and was happy that I had actually made a good decision(which almost never happens with me). I fished around and landed one more largemouth that was about 2 pounds. Since there were no more trees to flip I decided to head back to the pizza place and refish that water. When I pulled up a guy was putting on a show with an Alabama rig and caught about 10 smallies while I was around him. I fished around and managed to 2 more largemouth that were both about 2 1/2 pounds and one smallie that was round a pound.
Overall I caught 8 largemouth and 1 smallmouth and my best 5 went for about 14 1/2 pounds. All the fish were very fat and healthy. As I worked around the pizza place, you would see large schools of smallmouth on your electronics. When I got back to the ramp I talked to the guy who was fishing the Alabama rig and he said that he looked for the schools of smallmouth on his electronics and would just cast to them until they fired up and started to feed. He caught about 25 and his best 5 went for around 20 lbs. I sure wish I had brought an Alabama rig with...
I hope that everyone had a nice holiday and that you all have a nice New Year.
