Hit the ice today at a local pond. In one hour, we finished with 6 bluegills and 1 pumpkinseed; my buddy finished with 4 bluegills and 1 largemouth. Ice depth was spotty (1-3 inches) and not safe towards the middle. Fish were relating closely to the bottom in about 4-5 feet of water. Green or pink ice jigs tipped with waxies were most effective. I also caught some bigger 'gills on a 1/8 oz Jigging Rap tipped with waxies. We usually caught two or three fish out of each hole. The big fish was the 11 inch largemouth followed by an 8 inch bluegill. Action really slowed down as the day went on, but overall a great opener.
