Just saw an article in the Pennsylvania Outdoor News, that I thought would be worth a mention. According to the paper, as of April 1st, any one using the free out door rifle range on State game lands 43, will require one of two things. 1) either a current Pa hunting or fur takers license, or 2) purchase a yearly range pass for $30,00. The range pass will be available directly from the Pa Game Commission in Harrisburg, on line in their Outdoor Shop. We heard originally that we (Gordon's) would be able to issue them on out point of sale license machine. As of yet we have not heard from them, on this matter. The 1st year pass will be good from April 1st to June 30th. At that time you will need to purchase a new yearly pass, that will be good till the following June 30th 2012 (1 year). This coincides with the Hunting license time frame. The range pass will be usable at any Pa Game Commission range. The pass fee is designed to help pay for maintenance and clean up of the facilities, when used by non hunters.

It's about tine they've done this. Nothing worse then waiting to get a bench to shoot a deer rifle while guys are shooting Uzi's and AK-47's. I personally had this happen to me two years ago. There was also word a couple of years back of a guy who was shooting a Gatlin gun there.

I don't go there anymore because it's so bad. but glad to hear. Going to be hard to enforce it at first but it's about time. Kids shooting handguns at 100 yards is just silly.

I do think this is a good idea but I also think it has the potential to create problems as well. You can expect to see those same types of folks seeking out other places to shoot, whether it be a range or a clearing in the woods somewhere, instead of paying up/doing the right thing.

Since this went into effect, the amount of firing from the range is about 20% to 30% of what it used to be. I live well within earshot of the range, some days you barely hear a thing, whereas the past several years, it's been almost a constant barrage from 8 till dark, you could set your watch by it. I also thought that the move might spawn a plinking fest along the nearby backroads throughout the gamelands, but I see no evidence of that, and I'm out there every day.
It's turned out to be a great move the PGC's part. It has made it clear to me that a good 1/2 to 3/4 of the people ( and I use that term very loosely) using the range were non hunters. Now, if they could just work at relaxing some of the Sunday hunting laws....

Where do I go to get a pass to the range. I stopped going there for my recreational shooting due to never being able to get a firing line, and all of the "crazies" that used to shoot there.

Here is the link to th Pa Game commission page that explains the details of the permit, The sixth paragraph down includes the link to the application.*** Please note the dates. If you buy a permit today, it is only valid till June 30th 2011. If you wait till the end of this month, it will be good for the full term July 1st 2011 to June 30th 2012. This coincides with the sales of Pa hunting licenses. If you purchase a Pa hunting/trapping license (which will go on sale this coming July 1st) this also will allow you to use the ranges at no charge, no other permit required. www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt?open=514&objID=937842&mode=2

Does anyone have a suggestion for muzzleloader practice? I bought a TCA 50cal two years ago and have only shot it when I was at camp. 100yds seems kinda far for blackpowder. Maybe I just need to improve my game?

There's a place in Bucks County that I go to. Wicen Farm on Mozart Road in Furlong. 100 yard range, 25 yard pistol, archery & trap. They require a club membership (I think it's $25 now) and a daily use fee. Always have a couple of range officers there & pretty strict rules (mostly forced by neighbor's lawsuits). Still, in all, a nice place to shoot.
