In responce to the decreasing Shad population in the Delaware River, the PF&B commission has proposed a shad limit reduction on the river for 2010. The current limit is 6 daily, and proposed would be a daily limit of 3. A hydroacoustic study done yearly on the river showed a high of 417,300 fish in 2001. The last survey done in 2007 showed a total count of 181,600 adult shad. Fish biologists and officials agree , shad stocks have plummeted, but the reasons for the decline are unclear. Several theories are, off shore fisheries, where shad are taken as a bycatch and use for bait for lobster, and cat food. Another theory is the booming striper population, preying upon the fish.
